Wellington Zoo

Wellington Zoo is New Zealand's first Zoo, having been established in 1906. Until it became a charitable trust in 2003, it was operated as part of Wellington City Council (WCC). Wellington Zoo continues to act as a Council Controlled Organisation (CCO). The Zoo receives around half of its funding from WCC, with the remaining being revenue generated by Wellington Zoo Trust. As well as being one of Wellington’s leading national and international tourist attractions, Wellington Zoo actively contributes to animal conservation projects (locally and internationally) and is a leader in environmental sustainability in the community.

Wellington Zoo considers that working towards carbon neutrality is the right thing to do to minimise its negative impacts on the planet. Wellington Zoo prides itself in being a trend setter in the community for best practice environmental activities. This means that being seen to be reducing its GHG emissions is essential. Going carbon neutral will take this a step further, and will help to lead and inspire other business and organisations to take similar steps to reducing their GHG emissions.
