The role of Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment was established by the Environment Act 1986 to provide Members of Parliament with independent, high-quality advice about environmental matters. The Commissioner is one of three Officers of Parliament, reporting to Parliament as a whole through the Speaker of the House and Officers of Parliament Committee.
The role of the Commissioner is to maintain and improve the quality of the environment by providing robust independent advice that influences decisions. Advice is generally provided in the form of reports on investigations, presentations an submissions to select committees and briefings to Members of Parliament.
