( Overview )

Why the change?

Digital platforms are often overlooked when considering sustainability, yet they are a significant part of our carbon footprint. We reimagined our website to not only talk about climate action but to actively contribute to it. Every element has been crafted to minimise environmental impact while delivering a seamless and engaging user experience.

The internet is a massive energy consumer—using 1,021 TWh of electricity every year. That’s more than the entire United Kingdom! The energy consumption of an average website depends on factors like hosting efficiency, design, and user interaction, according to independent tools like Website Carbon.

Globally, the average web page produces approximately 0.8 grams CO2 equivalent per page view.
For a website with 10,000 monthly page views, that's 102 kg CO2e per year.

0.8g

of CO2

Equivalent per average pageview

102kg

of CO2

Average annual emission

This annual impact is equivalent to driving 87 km in a petrol car or boiling water for 260 cups of tea!

This means that every website, no matter how small, contributes to energy consumption and carbon emissions. Even seemingly minor digital activities, like browsing a website, have a real world environmental impact.

There are tools for measuring performance

Understanding and improving energy use starts with the right tools. Here are some simple ways to measure and track energy performance.

These tools won’t give exact values but are perfect for spotting energy-heavy processes and tracking progress over time. Small changes add up to big savings!

Windows task manager

Monitor how much energy your computer uses by checking CPU and memory activity.

Browser tools

Use task managers in browsers like Edge or Chrome to see which tabs and apps are draining the most energy.

Energy profilers

Tools like Intel Power Gadget or Joulemeter estimate energy use and help identify areas for improvement.

What we’ve done to make a change

Eco-friendly hosting

Eco-friendly hosting

Our website is hosted on energy-efficient servers, reflecting our commitment to sustainability and reducing our carbon footprint. Traditional servers in data centres consume energy continuously, but by partnering with providers that prioritise renewable energy and energy-efficient technologies, we can lower our impact. This choice supports our broader mission to adopt environmentally conscious practices in every aspect of our operations.

Optimised performance

Eco-friendly hosting

From streamlined code to reduced resource usage, our site is built for optimal efficiency. By embracing a "less is more" philosophy, we have pared back design elements and minimised resource consumption. This approach includes compressing images, reducing file sizes, and optimising code to decrease bandwidth and server load, ensuring a leaner, faster, and more eco-friendly browsing experience.

A clean and simple look

Eco-friendly hosting

The new design embodies lightness and simplicity, symbolising transparency and clarity in our approach. Generous white space enhances readability, while purposeful typography adds character and focus. This aesthetic not only reflects our brand ethos but also aligns with sustainable web design principles, creating a digital experience that is both visually engaging and environmentally responsible.

( The results )

Only 0.02g of CO2 is produced every time someone visits this page

Over a year, with 10,000 monthly page views, this page uses just 5kWh of energy (equivalent to driving an electric car 32km). That usage produces:

1.93kg

of CO2

Equivalent to boiling 262 cups of tea

2 bln

bubbles

Woah, that’s a lot of bubbles!

make the

difference too!

Engage with our energy-saving toggle,
a feature designed to inspire mindful digital practices.

1.

Lower energy use

Activating the toggle reduces screen brightness and optimises the site’s energy consumption. The colours displayed on a screen can change how much battery your phone or computer uses. This is more effective on devices with OLED displays.

2.

Enhanced focus

By leveraging negative space and adjusting visual intensity, it creates a seamless and focused browsing experience.

3.

Take action

Every interaction supports a smaller environmental footprint, allowing users to contribute to sustainability in a tangible way, we’ve consciously made this available.

So while we’re still not perfect we have put this in the forefront of this design and architecture, and will continue to strive towards bettering our impact everyday.

The environmental impact claims made above are based on data and calculations provided by Website Carbon. While we strive to ensure accuracy, the information is subject to the methodologies and assumptions used by Website Carbon. For detailed insights and updates, please refer directly to their website.

We acknowledge that the numbers presented above about the website impact will change over time, we will look to review and update these where possible.
